Four exciting, all expenses paid training opportunities are now available through Cook Islands Investment Corporation partnering with the International Seabed Authority.
The training opportunities are made possible through the International Seabed Association Contractors’ Training Programme for applications from nationals of developing countries that are Member States of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
In accordance with its contract for exploration for polymetallic nodules, signed with ISA on 15 April 2016, Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) is offering two seminar training opportunities on dredging technologies for candidates as part of its 2024 training programme.
The course is being organised by the Antwerp Port Training Center (APEC) in Antwerp, Belgium, and covers all essential theoretical and practical aspects of dredging.
This will include navigating in muddy areas, strategies for the dumping of dredged sediments, the various types of dredgers, dredger simulators, maintenance dredging, large scale projects, spoil recycling, maintenance of dredgers, construction of dredgers, technical aspects and new developments and technical renovation including dredging technologies for international maritime experts.
Nominees will be given an in-depth introduction to the latest high-tech, state-of-the-art dredging technologies and equipment.
The dredging technologies and corresponding environmental management techniques from the dredging industry will be indispensable knowledge leading towards sustainable deep-sea mining practices.
The course will be delivered over two weeks from 3-14 June 2024, by experienced port professionals and academics who will provide in-depth content in a well-balanced combination of theory sessions and visits, completed by case studies.

CIIC is also offering access to a two to three-month internship at Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR) in Antwerp, Belgium with access to the GSR/DEME Research laboratory.
Under the internship, a comparative study will be carried out in relation to physical properties of polymetallic nodules sampled in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone and National Waters of the Cook Islands.
Analyses will consist of geotechnical and geological tests to better define their physical properties, with a particular focus on water content, density and porosity and will highlight physical variations from both types of nodules.
A desk study and bibliography research will also be required, as the final results will be compiled in a report.
The internship will span approximately eight to 12 weeks from September to October 2024.
Exact dates and duration of the internship will be determined by the selected candidate, CIIC and GSR.

One Master’s Fellowship is also being offered by CIIC in accordance with its contract for exploration for polymetallic nodules.
The Master of Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management programme will be organised by CIIC, in collaboration with the Faculty of Science of the Free University of Brussels, Antwerp University and Ghent University.
The programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach integrating physical, chemical, geological, ecological, and societal aspects, including nature conservation and sustainable development.
In general, the Oceans & Lakes programme puts strong emphasis on acquiring skills, both in marine and lacustrine research and management.
It requires full-time attendance and active participation in lectures and practical exercises, visits to marine research centres, field trips and excursions.
