The Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC), in collaboration with the National Environment Service, the Cook Islands Police and the Hon George Angene, and his office, will be overseeing tree pruning in the Avarua township. This exercise starts tomorrow, will be undertaken on Saturdays and will span over the next four Saturdays leading into Christmas.

With the cyclone season approaching and with the public’s safety in mind, this pruning will ensure the ongoing and safe use of public areas – including the reserves and the public thoroughfares.

The CEO of CIIC, Allan Jensen says the work will include trimming back or pruning branches that pose a safety risk or are dead; removing branches and vegetation that is obstructing the view of road users, traffic signs, lightng and visual obstructions that pose a risk to public safety. The intention is to not remove anytrees, this is tree trimming.

The work which will be supervised by skilled personnell with a focus on maintaining the health and vigour of the trees and other vegetation that is on the median strip/island through town from opposite the ANZ Bank, through to opposite the Punanga Nui Market.

Whilst some of the tress were planted more than a decade ago, this attention will help train the younger ones to develop good branch and crown structure.

The Cook Islands Investment Corporation would like to thank the Hon George Angene, who is contributing significantly to this work.

The Cook Islands Investment Corporation thanks the public in advance for their cooperation and caution while this tree pruning project is being undertaken.

All care will be taken to ensure this work is completed safely and with a minimum of disruption to traffic and pedestrians.
